A Christian has been saved by Grace, through Faith in Jesus Christ.
I know this is obvious, but why complicate things? I may alter the sentence depending on the audience (do they have the categories of sin, grace--do they even know who Christ is?)
This isn't an original, but I like the expression I heard that describes the difference once a person comes into a personal relationship with Jesus: "A person who comes to Christ goes from having a hopeless end to having an endless hope."
(I actually had one of my employees ask me this very question a few months ago. I wish I could say I answered it well without a bit of stammering...)
A Christian knows that his or her hope of eternal salvation lies solely in the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross and nothing in what he or she has done.
